Admirably staged and you will intelligently dialogued, it will have zero higher difficulties inside way of life off their incredibly ugly title.” [ 8 ]

The fresh film’s blogger and you will director, Robert Rossen, sets up a multidimensional chess games, getting mortal limits, between Johnny, their company (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s partner (Ellen Received), a beneficial cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and an effective scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whoever sister (Nina Foch) worked at casino and you may old a corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). The fresh new caustically epigrammatic software, this new cast’s suavely controlled body language of like and you may danger, and Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and you may fashionably assertive photos (in addition to their political conscience) get this pugnacious but really detail by detail spectacle an invisible vintage of your own genre.” [ 10 ]

Cobb, because the an authorities inspector, also in the score . Whilst the spot follows a familiar development, the new characterizations are new in addition to performances adequate to overbalance. Dialog is actually terse and you will relevant, avoiding the sentimental, phoney touch. Unusual cam basics come-along occasionally so you’re able to heighten desire and you will temporarily stop the attention. Good teamplay by the Robert Rossen, increasing just like the manager-scripter, and you can Milton Holmes, amazing publisher and you will member music producer, and aids in making this a soft design.” [ 11 ]

It is mostly a point of watching Mr. Powell go through his paces stylishly when you find yourself a massive throw out of actors and you will performers bring him conventional support. Evelyn Keyes plays the nice little lady whom brings about the brand new finest in him and you may Ellen Received is the sleek and you may slinky vixen whom will get him towards jams. Thomas Gomez are greasy just like the villain and you can Lee J. Cobb does a different sort of able trip just like the a tired cops inspector just who ultimately closes possible. Many drinking and you can smoking is accomplished because of the every concerned.” [ 12 ]
